Well, our sports seasons are finished for the year. There were some ups and downs, some highs and lows. Hopefully, students and coaches came a way from their teams with growth in skills, a closer relationship with God, strength in friendships, peace in dealing with conflicts, and an overall positive vibe from their sporting experience.
I would like to take this time to once again thank our Coaches. They put so much time, thought, energy, and effort into leading a team. From planning practices, deciding who will play what and when and where, getting to know their athletes, logistics of travel, paying attention to the physical and mental and spiritual well-being of their team, figuring out how to improve skills, technique and strategy, trying to get people to work together, finding a balance between team dedication, school work, outside work, family life and social life, and also having fun while doing it all. It is such a big job and I'm sure I missed aspects of it in the list above. As a school we are so thankful to ALL our coaches for their efforts. I encourage everyone who was involved on a team to express their thanks to their coaches, assistant coaches, and other helpers.
Also, I would like to thank the families of the coaches. It is not always easy to have a spouse/partner/parent who is a coach as they are often gone from home, mentally lost in thought, or busy planning and preparing. Thank you so much for allowing your significant other to coach our athletes.
Thank you to those family members who supported their teams with willingness to drive and chaperone, for coming out to cheer the teams on, and positive encouragement.
And to take an image from the Helping Hands website... it truly does "take a village"...
Have a good summer everyone! Best wishes for those students who are graduating and moving on from CCHS!

OFSAA...
This past week was OFSAA for Track and Field.... that means the top athletes of all schools across all of Ontario meet to compete. This is not just Single A schools but all schools. CCHS had 2 athletes participate in this event which was held in Windsor. Adeleene Thompson made her first OFSAA appearance this year in Junior High Jump. She was in a 3-way tie for 17th place. Way to go, Adeleene! Well done!
Carolyn Prins returned to OFSAA for a second year and participated in Long jump and Triple jump. In Long jump she was 9th (out of 24). In Triple jump she came in 1st place with her 11.92 m jump. Not only did she have a personal best jump (by about 30 cm's) but she was 5 cm's short of the OFSAA record!
Now I want you to take a moment and actually visualize this... 11.92 meters... to do a hop, step and jump. I've been told that in Triple jump each portion should be about a third of your jump. I know that I have long legs but I cannot even imagine doing a "step" that is almost 4 meters... let alone adding in a hop and a jump!! Today we took a photo of Carolyn and her fellow students to show how long it really is. 28 people sitting side-by-each!

Congratulations to our Track team members who competed at the OFSAA Regionals meet. It was some tough competition in Cambridge last Friday and Saturday. Athletes had to finish in the top 4 to qualify for the OFSAA Championships in Windsor.
Amy Koomans competed in the Senior Girls' High Jump. She finished just a little out of the top 4 but her season best has her tied for a senior girls' top 10 jump in the entire province. Great season Amy!
Adeleene Thompson also was in high jump for the junior girls. She had a personal best jump of 1.5m and placed 2nd! She is OFSAA bound!
Carolyn Prins had a superb day in the Triple jump and the Long jump. She had a huge personal best Triple jump of 11.60m to blow away the competition and had a big season best 5.35m in the Long jump to come in 2nd to last year's OFSAA champ. Way to go girls!

They were quite pleased to pull off a win against PRC. Friday was a great day for playing... Saturday was wet and cold! Coach Steve Kloostra had many words of praise for the team. Thanks to Coach Steve and Josh Norg for your efforts with the team this year!
Guys... get your uniforms in to Mrs. Smith please... there's a competition for you guys to hand it all in before the girls' team does!!
The Girls' Soccer Season has also come to an end. They travelled to Redeemer College University to play in the Christian Schools Tournament. They also played hard and faced some very tough competition especially considering a number of our players had never played soccer before. The team was very excited to have scored not only their first goal of the season but their second goal as well! Thank you so much to Coaches Karen Koomans and Brian Roffel for their efforts with the team! It sounds like the weekend was a lot of fun!

This Week at a Glance... Tuesday, May 3, 2016
Track and Field had a good meet on Saturday in Windsor. It started out decent weather but than later in the day it got cold and wet. An added dimension to the challenges of Track and Field! The team held their own and represented CCHS well. Good on ya Flames! This week they have the LKSSAA All Comers Meet at 3:30 on Wednesday and travel to St. Thomas on Saturday for the Kettle Creek meet. Please check with your coach on practice times/days.
Badminton:
The Junior and Senior Badminton team (one team from each division) traveled to Brock University last weekend for the Christian Schools tournament. It was a good weekend with lots of good play and fun for some players to see the Niagara Falls for the first time on Friday night. No one made it to the playoffs but overall a great weekend.
Thanks to coaches Dale Smith, Kevin Wolting, Dale Lahey and Brian Koomans. Also thanks to the assistants and alumni Cam Koomans and Alyson Bierling for helping to coach at this final tourney. And to Michelle Koomans for chaperoning as well.
Badminton players please hand in your clean shirts to Mrs. Smith.
Girls' Soccer:
The season is well underway with only 2 more league games to play. They do not have games this week but rather practiced early this morning and will again practice on Thursday after school.
Boys' Soccer:
The guys are also well into their season but have less teams in their league then the girls and therefore are playing more games. Today they travel to NLSS (Forest) to play at 3:30 and on Thursday they will host LKCS at 4 pm.
Last week our school enjoyed the Celebration of Learning evening and to showcase the sports that we participate in here at CCHS, we hung pictures of each team. It was a reminder to me what dedicated and passionate coaches we have here for our student athletes. It takes a lot of time and effort from a coach and they do it willingly and eagerly. Many have different reasons for coaching but we are thankful for them all. We are also thankful to their families for "allowing" and supporting their loved one who is a coach. If you see a coach today... give 'em a big THANK YOU!! :)

So the winter sports season has wrapped up and the spring sports are just starting...
Volleyball...
The Junior Girls' team ended with a thrilling match in the Semi-finals against Blenheim. They pushed it to 5 games and ended losing the 5th game 22-20. Understand that the 5th game was to only go to 15 points, however, a team has to win by 2 points.... the game was so close that it went all the way to 22-20! It was an exciting evening in Blenheim and our junior girls played really, really well. Even though it meant the end of the season, the team came out on a high. Thanks to Coach Dale Lahey and assistant Seth Roffel.
The Senior Girls' team played in the LKSSAA Finals also at the Blenheim High school. It also was a thrilling night with our girls playing very well together. They came out the victors! This past week they hosted the SWOSSAA Championships which means the winner of Lambton-Kent plays the winner of Windsor-Essex. The Maranatha Christian Academy Panthers came to play our Flames. These two teams have not seen each other since elementary school battles. Maranatha ended up winning in 5 games against our Flames. It was a tough battle but a very unique situation with these two Christian schools facing off at this level. At the end, before handing out the hardware and before offering congratulations, Mr. Bierling called both teams in together and in the huddle, he was able to pray to God to offer thanks and praise. Thanks to Coaches Ingrid Lahey and Patricia Sluys.
Now Spring Sports are going...
Junior Badminton starts practices today 3:30-5; Wednesday 3:30-5 and Thursday 5-6:30 under Coaches Kevin Wolting and Dale Lahey.
Senior Badminton starts practises tomorrow at 4:30-6; Thursday 3:30-5; and Friday 3:30-5 under Coaches Dale Smith and Brian Koomans.

Congrats to the Junior and Senior Girls' Volleyball teams. They both made it past round one of the playoffs. Semi-final matches are set for today. The Senior Girls' will host PainCourt with game time at 4:30 pm. It is the best of 5 games. The Junior Girls' will travel to Blenheim to play with game time at 4 o'clock. The Finals are set for Friday with times and locations to be determined based on results of tonight.
The Boys' Basketball team lost their Quarter Final match against the tough PainCourt squad last Thursday. Definitely not a highlight of the season but the guys sure learned a lot as a team and many thanks to Coaches Jon and Mitch for all their efforts!
Badminton is just around the corner...
Soccer and Track will not start for a little while yet. We would still love to find someone that can help Rosemary Koomans out with the non-running events part of Track. Please get in touch with Sharon Smith for more details.

Sorry this post is slightly late in the week...
The Senior teams are gearing up for their annual Christian Schools Tourney. This is a tournament run for all Christian Schools in Ontario (up to 19 teams). All the schools are classified as Single A schools and the tournaments are typically a high level of play and a lot of fun for teams involved.
The Boys' Basketball team is travelling to Hamilton on Friday morning. The website link is: http://www.guidodebres.org/athletics/ocssaa/tournament_information.html
There is information here about the tournament and they will be posting results as it is happening.
The Girls' Volleyball team is travelling to Toronto on Thursday evening to play at Humber College. The website to follow this tournament is: https://sites.google.com/site/ocssaavolleyball/
In a month or two, we will be starting into our Spring Season of sports. What we typically offer here is Track and Field, Boys' and Girls' Soccer, and Badminton. We are looking for people that are able to help coach especially with Track and Field non-running events. We have a high jump coach but would like someone that has some knowledge in the throwing and other jumping events to assist. We also could use someone to help with Badminton.
Please contact Sharon at the school if you are interested. sharonsmith@chathamchristian.ca

Congratulations the Senior Girls' Volleyball team for winning the tournament last Friday held at LKCS! This week they host league games on Wednesday in our gym starting at 4 o'clock. Other schools attending are: AMSS, ESPC, and SCITS. Then on Friday they will travel to Blenheim to participate in a tournament.
Practices this week will be on Monday 5-6:30; Tuesday and Thursday 3:30-5.
The Junior Girls' Volleyball team played well in their tournament at CK on Friday. In the round robin they were tied with first (out of 5 teams) with CKSS midgets. But CKSS had won the split when playing our girls and so we ended up 2nd. Then we faced the 3rd place Blenheim in the semi-finals. Blenheim was the stronger this time and they ended up continuing on to the finals. The girls played well and have really been improving over the season. Good job Flames!
This week practices are on Monday 5-6:30; Tuesday and Thursday 3:30-5.
The tournament scheduled for Saturday has been cancelled.
The Boys' Basketball team participated in a tournament on Friday and Saturday in Tilbury. The guys won their first game against TDHS 54-47. Then they struggled against the strong ESPC losing 22-52. On Saturday they played hard as they were down to 6 players. They fought hard against WDSS keeping it close at 30-38. And they pulled out a win against St. FX 39-37. Great work guys!
This week they host LCCVI at home on Tuesday (12th) at 5:30 pm. Practices are on Monday 3:30-5 and on Thursday 5-6:30 pm.
