This Week at a Glance.... Monday, May 11, 2015

The Girls and Boys' Soccer teams travelled to the Christian Schools Tournament this past weekend.

The Girls' Soccer team in particular had quite a successful tournament placing second in pool play.  The scores were:
CCHS vs. Quinte 1-0
CCHS vs. Woodland 1-4
CCHS vs. Durham 3-0
CCHS vs. Emmanuel 3-2
CCHS vs. Providence 0-1
Thank you to Coaches Brian Roffel and Karen Koomans for their efforts this season!

Boys' Soccer team was placed in a tough draw for pool play on Friday and were overmatched by the larger and talented schools of Guido (eventual Bronze Medallist) and Toronto (eventual Silver Medallist).  Although we battled hard, Guido easily controlled play and cruised to a 6-0 result.  Although Toronto was also easily the better side, the CCHS Flames met the challenge early, narrowly missing a few good scoring chances before Daniel Grootenboer flashed down the left side then picking out Bryce Koomans with a cross for a one goal lead.  Toronto reasserted themselves, scoring five to take control of the match.  Late in the match Daniel Grootenboer cut the lead to 5-2 with a precise free kick drilled to the top corner of the net frame, but the end result was not in doubt.  The two losses relegated us to the B Flight side of the tournament – where we wished to be at the outset.
Our first B Flight match was against Rheoboth.  As our third game of the day under hot conditions, we played poorly with little energy in the first half and deserved to be down 1-0 at the mid-break.  The boys found determination and drive in the 2nd time frame after Daniel Grootenboer scored to tie the match.  Momentum in play shifted in our favour and pressing led to a second goal.  Kaden VanHelden’s cross into the area was well timed by Tye Douma, who firmly finished the service for a lead we would not relinquish.  The Flames held defensively and continued to control the match through the half allowing James Bultje to mark an insurance goal with a strike from distance.  The 3-1 victory advanced CCHS to the B Flight Semi-final.
The Saturday Semi-final opponent was Woodland, another larger school disappointed to have not competed well in Friday’s matches.  They took out their frustrations against us with a much more talented side.  Although we battled their better ball skills and speed with our determination and spirit, we were outmatched.  The final whistle blew with Woodland up by a 5-0 margin.  (summary by Coach Roger).
Many thanks to Coach Roger Grootenboer for his efforts this season and to Joash Roffel, Debbie VanHelden, and Jessica Brooks for driving/chaperoning.
